Malibu to hold first El Niño preparedness workshop Tuesday

Residents and building professionals can ask city staff and Caltrans about storm risks, coastal erosion and conditions along PCH

The City of Malibu will hold the first in a series of El Niño preparedness workshops Tuesday, Sept. 29, from 3 to 5 p.m. in the City Hall Council Chambers. Representatives from the city’s Community Development, Public Works and Public Safety departments, along with Caltrans, will discuss storm preparation, flooding and debris flow risks, coastal erosion, infrastructure conditions and ongoing work along Pacific Coast Highway. Homeowners and building professionals will have an opportunity to ask questions about local conditions and steps they can take before winter storms arrive.

The city says it has been preparing for potential El Niño conditions since early summer. In Malibu, officials are paying particular attention to erosion, flooding, mudslides and debris flows, including risks in areas affected by the Palisades Fire.

El Niño can increase the likelihood of a wet winter in Southern California, but it does not determine when individual storms will arrive or how severe they will be. The National Weather Service describes increased precipitation as a typical El Niño influence in California.

The city plans to hold additional workshops as winter approaches and conditions develop. A recording of Tuesday’s workshop will be posted afterward on the City of Malibu YouTube channel for residents unable to attend.
