High surf causes 30-foot sinkhole, collapsing driveway at Broad Beach home

Neighbors in the usually serene Broad Beach neighborhood woke up to quite a surprise at approximately 5:45 a.m. on Sept. 8 when crews from the Los Angeles County Fire Department and officials from Southern California Gas Co. descended on the area to address damage caused by an approximately 30-foot-by-30-foot sinkhole that resulted in the collapse of a driveway at a beachfront residence, possibly damaging a gas main.

After Malibu endured startling beach incursion during high surf and a large Labor Day storm attributable to Tropical Storm Marie, the driveway in the 31600 block of Sea Level Drive East near Point Lechuza simply could not stay steady. Video from the incident reveals the unrelenting high surf, with waves crashing underneath the home through the collapsed section of the driveway.

Malibu Building and Safety personnel are en route to evaluate the structural integrity of the home. Officials reported that the National Weather Service’s high surf and coastal flood advisories remained in effect until 11 p.m. Tuesday. Weather forecasters warned of continuing dangerous rip currents and large breaking waves, with high tides further increasing the risk of coastal flooding.

No injuries were reported, and it remained unclear whether anyone was at the home when the incident occurred.
