After hearing a presentation on outdoor night lighting and its effects on rural communities, the Malibu Planning Commission at its meeting on Feb. 19 will consider recommending a change to the city’s zoning ordinance to reflect new lighting standards.

James Benya, a lighting design expert who works at UC Davis, explained the global issue of light pollution in a presentation to the commission on Feb. 4, and recommended ways the City of Malibu can implement standards to keep night skies darkened.

At next week’s meeting, the Planning Commission could decide to formally recommend the City Council consider an ordinance to implement such lighting standards by amending its Zoning Ordinance.
