The Malibu Planning Commission this week recommended the City Council consider amending the city’s zoning code to include a lighting ordinance.
Malibu City Council could direct city staff to draft an ordinance as early as its meeting on March 11, Planning Director Joyce Parker-Bozylinski said.
“If the council directs us to move forward with a lighting ordinance, we will complete the needed research at that time,” she said.
The recommendation from the Planning Commission came on the heels of a presentation from a lighting expert on Feb. 4.
James Benya, a lighting design expert who works at UC Davis, explained the global issue of light pollution in a presentation to the commission and recommended ways the City of Malibu can implement standards to keep night skies darkened.
