Children and volunteers united to send a message to protect the ocean from trash and plastic litter.

More than 3,000 Los Angeles-based students, teachers and volunteers took a stand in the sand and participated in the 22nd annual Kids Ocean Day and Adopt-A-Beach Cleanup. During the cleanup efforts, volunteers raised awareness for beaches and oceans, cleaned Dockweiler State Beach and formed aerial art in the sand. Kids Ocean Day was formed by the Malibu Foundation for Environmental Education, a program that teaches Los Angeles school kids about pollution and its adverse impact on the ocean.Â
