Five Malibu High School (MHS) swimmers — Sorin Moore, Amy Perna, Kennan Hotchkiss, Everest Brady and Marcel Hurtubise — spent last weekend competing in Oxnard at the Rio Mesa Swim Club MLK Swim Meet. All five athletes represented the Malibu Seawolves, the MHS-based club for which they swim year-round.

Several swimmers bettered their times despite an intense week of training after returning from holiday break. Hotchkiss and Brady both lowered their 200-yard individual medley marks, clocking times of 2:15.24 and 2:15.40, respectively. Hurtubise took eight seconds off his 200-yard breaststroke time, finishing in a time of 2:57.44. He also dropped nearly two seconds in his 100-yard backstroke with a time of 1:12.12. Moore lowered her 100-yard butterfly time by two seconds as well.

Hotchkiss finished off the weekend for the Seawolves by swimming the 200-yard butterfly and 1,000-yard freestyle within 15 minutes of each other at the end of Sunday’s competition. He managed to finish just two seconds off of his best time in the 1,000, clocking a 10:26.03 to finish second — the highest Seawolf finish of the weekend.

All five swimmers will compete with the MHS swim team in the spring along with their club training. Moore, Perna and Hotchkiss will be new to the team as freshmen, bringing fresh talent and years of swimming experience with the Seawolves and its predecessor, Westside Aquatics. Hurtubise will return to the team as a sophomore and Brady as a junior.

Younger Seawolves swimmers Luca and Takoda Moore also competed in last weekend’s meet, with Luca logging a 16-second time drop in her 100-yard butterfly.
