Juan Cabrillo students celebrate Earth Day by participating in a performance art project by making “trees” from collected pieces of junk mail on Earth Day.

Juan Cabrillo Elementary School hosted a celebration last week in observance of Earth Day.

The day began with a schoolwide assembly about energy, which discussed what energy is, how it’s used, as well as renewable and non-renewable types of energy. The assembly was taught by two UCLA students and arranged by science teacher Kathy Hutchinson.

Additionally, the gathering addressed junk mail and its burden on the environment. After the assembly, students participated in a performance art project, coordinated by art teacher Nicole Fisher, where students created “trees” from collected pieces of junk mail.
