Letter: Species Speak

Letter to the Editor

Three or so weeks ago, the trophy killing of Cecil the Lion caused mass uproar. This moment of awareness clearly has not been extended to the lives of fish, as evidenced by the grotesque photos of a local young man posing alongside magnificent creatures he killed during his “Unforgettable Summer.”

Thank you for reinforcing the notion that taking lives is not just socially acceptable, but praiseworthy. Celebrating the deeds these photos depict alongside reader commentary regarding Cecil conveys the unfortunate, outdated and dangerous belief that some species simply matter more than others.
