Horizons at Calabasas

Horizons at Calabasas opened in August and is already filling up.

A nontraditional approach to senior living, the luxurious apartment complex boasts a long list of community amenities and services, making it the premier active adult apartment community in Calabasas.

“It’s like living in a nice, relaxing resort-style hotel without kids running around,” Community Manager Debbie Nadon said. “We want it to be a very positive living experience.”

The apartments are for adults age 55-and-up and include 60 units of one- and two-bedroom apartments with dens and media rooms. Some of the amenities include concierge services, 24-hour emergency maintenance services, housekeeping, transportation services, community room, media room, pool and spa, gym, outdoor fire pit and barbecue grills.

“I wanted to create a great community of people that I would want to hang out with,” Dan Zaharoni, principal of Horizons at Calabasas, said. “A place where people can enjoy their time as opposed to a place to sleep.”

The majority of tenants are adults who have owned their home for a very long time, and are now ready to sell because their children have moved out, but are not ready for a retirement facility, Nadon said.

“Age is just a number,” Nadon said. “It’s much more a state of mind. We have a 90-year-old tenant who is so full of life that you would never guess her age.”

“Today’s seniors are much more active and independent and want to live the same luxurious type of life they have been living,” Zaharoni said. “We want this place to become the hub of senior activity in Calabasas and welcome the community neighborhood for all types of social activities.”

Horizons at Calabasas will be starting a series of monthly “Downsizing Seminars” the third Wednesday of every month beginning on Nov. 19. A team of real estate brokers, financial advisors, tax experts and senior moving specialists will be available to help adults with the whole process.

“It’s a big decision,” Nadon said. “But we want them to know that it’s not quite as scary as you think it is.”

With a background in law and real estate, Zaharoni bought the property in 2006 and after examining the demographics of the world and seeing that the baby boomers are getting older, he knew that building a “Four Seasons for seniors” would be very well received in the area.

At age 46, Zaharoni has come a long way from his first job of delivering pizza at age 16 while in high school. With his bright red hair turning gray, he’s quickly becoming a “strawberry blond,” and still enjoys his athletic life. After practicing law for 13 years, Zaharoni is very grateful to have found the senior housing world.

“I love working with seniors,” Zaharoni said. “I feel like I’ve done something at the end of the day. I get to help people on a daily basis. I was miserable being an attorney.”

Zaharoni’s message to the Malibu community is not to expect your senior years to decline your quality of life. “Look at it with expectation instead of dread.”

Leasing prices at Horizons at Calabasas range from $2,100 a month to $4,200 a month, depending on what floor the unit is on, location and size of apartment.
