The Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District is set to host three welcome events for parents of children entering kindergarten and transitional kindergarten (TK), according to a SMMUSD release.

The events, which are to be held on Aug. 10, 11 and 13, are designed to reduce stress for parents of four and five-year-olds who are entering the school district this fall.

The event for Juan Cabrillo Elementary School, Point Dume Marine Science School and Webster Elementary School is Thursday, Aug. 13 at the Juan Cabrillo Elementary School cafeteria.

Superintendent Sandra Lyon intends to use the events to give parents an introduction to the SMMUSD and provide them with information about the near and distant future for their students.

“Our goal is to welcome all of our incoming TK and kindergarten parents and provide information about what an average kindergarten day looks like, how their child will progress through the grade levels and what opportunities our district provides for all of our students” said Lyon in the statement.

The district has worked in collaboration with the Santa Monica-Malibu PTA Council, Santa Monica-Malibu Education Foundation (SMMEF) and the City of Santa Monica to orchestrate these events.

Linda Greenberg, Executive Director of SMMEF, a non-profit that supports the academic and enrichment programs at the district’s 16 schools, emphasized the importance of the community and children’s parents in the district’s programs.

“We are looking forward to engaging with our community partners to provide all students with learning and enrichment opportunities [and] we are excited to welcome our new parents to that partnership,” said Greenberg.

The events are the first of their kind to be hosted by the district and are intended to complement welcome events held for kindergarten parents by many elementary schools each year.

The events will last from 6 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. each night. For detailed schedules of each event, visit the district’s website.
