Boys soccer keeps opponent scoreless in postseason win

The Malibu High School boys varsity soccer team is headed to the second round of the playoffs after a first-round shutout victory on Friday at home over Laguna Blanca.

The final score was 3-0.

The Sharks’ second-round game took place on Tuesday after The Malibu Times went to print.

The Sharks started strong on Friday, going into halftime up 1-0 on a goal from sophomore Justin “JJ” Saul. In the second half, the Sharks’ defense stayed tough, holding Laguna scoreless.

And the offense took care of business with two more goals, one on a free kick by freshman Munny Manak and another on a header by Saul.

“It’s a strong first victory, three to nothing, a shutout at home, and our defense was solid,” said goalkeeper Justin Hale.

The Sharks had an astounding regular season, going 10-1-1, with their only loss against Salesian High School. The tie was against Calabasas High, 1-1 result in the first game of the season.

The Sharks, led by head coach Dan Metcalfe, went a perfect 7-0 in league play, clinching the division championship.

Malibu held opponents to only seven total goals the entire season, while scoring, by far the best in the league.
