The Malibu Times publishers, Arnold and Karen Portugal York, announce the 2006 Dolphins Awards, recognizing individual or group contributions to the Malibu community. As in years past, many of those being honored this year are more than just individuals or groups who have made significant contributions to Malibu; they are in many ways the heart and soul of the city.
_ Candace Bowen
A community activist and volunteer, Bowen started the Women in Film breakfasts in Malibu, helping to bring notable women speakers to Malibu, and is the founder of the WIF Golf Classic, which raises funds for the nonprofit organization.
_ Keely Shaye Brosnan
Brosnan is a committed environmental activist, working tirelessly with organizations such as California Coastal Advocates, Heal the Bay, the NRDC, the Whaleman Foundation and more to help protect the Earth’s resources.
_ Chi Kim
Kim has gathered the admiration and support of the entire Point Dume community as the innovative and creative principal of Point Dume Elementary School, taking the school to top levels of academic achievement.
_ Bob Klein
Klein is a co-founder and a driving force behind the Malibu Celebration of Film, which brings films from around the world to the Malibu community for public viewing. MCOF also raises funds for FILMS”COOL,” an outreach film-mentoring program for young aspiring filmmakers.
_ Cindy Linke
Linke founded and leads the local chapter of Operation Interdependence, which brings comfort to the troops in Iraq through donations of letters, baskets and personal supplies.
_ Marnie Duke Mitzi and Carol Kmiec
Mitzi is the director of the Center for Arts at Pepperdine University and Kmiec is the university’s Artsreach program director. Each year, the two help bring thousands of children from inner cities and disadvantaged areas to enjoy the arts programs at the university.
_ Bonnie Reiss
A community and political activist, and senior advisor to Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, Reiss helped place Terry Tamminen at CalEPA, and went to work on the Environmental Action Plan. She also played a pivotal role in the negotiations over AB 32, the landmark greenhouse-gas-emissions bill that earned the governor international attention.
_ Pete and Elizabeth Anthony, and Debra LaGorce Kramer
The Anthonys and Kramer were the leading forces behind bringing to fruition the Point Dume Safe Routes to School Walkway Project, which allowed the building of pathways for children to walk to their local school.
_ Tarek Shraibati
A Scoutmaster for the Boy Scouts for more than two decades, Shraibati has put countless hours and energy into the healthy development and nurturing of each boy who has been a part of America Troop 224. He is committed to helping young men find a sense of purpose in their lives and broadening their horizons.
