Storm Brings Jet After Jet After Jet To Malibu

Last night was the first time this winter that the F-A-A was bringing airplanes in from the west … over the ocean … to Los Angeles.

And that meant jet after jet after jet … low and slow … approaching L-A-X over Malibu.

And that caught many Malibu residents by surprise.

The F-A-A is now using a different flight control system… using satellites … G-P-S and computers to move airplanes more efficiently … saving the airline companies time and money.

The new system … called Nextgen … is shifting air traffic patterns in a major way.

Residents of eastern Malibu and Topanga Canyon have been getting hammered with takeoff traffic … when jets are using the normal east to west pattern.

But last night … that was reversed … and the landing planes were passing over and over and over.

Flight radars showed that virtually every plane landing at L A X last night either came in from the north … over Point Dume …. or came on from the east … flying over Santa Monica and alonfg the coast before making a left turn to circle back on final approach.

L-A-X has set up a noise complaint system …. and more than 23 thousand noise complaints were filed in the latest month available … November.

Seven percent of those came from Malibu … 22 percent from Calabasas.

Last night’s barrage of jet noise may change that.

Dr. Lucy Jones, 6:30 Wednesday Night, at City Hall

The City of Malibu is bringing in earthquake science megastar Lucy Jones … to describe to Malibu the specific earthquake hazards unique to this unique chunk of geology and geography.

Jones is a familiar face to the world … having spent 33 years at the U S G S describing earthquakes on T-V.

Jones is being brought in by the city council … tomorrow night … to kick off a year-long Earthquake Resiliency Initiative.

The city staff will draw up an inventory of soft-story buildings … structures with first stories that are garages or stores … structures that have ground floors less rigid than the stories above.

These are particularly vulnerable to earthquake damage … like the Northridge Meadows apartments in 19-94 … which collapsed in the Northridge Earthquake and killed 16 people.

The city plans to offer owners incentives to harden these buildings.

Lucy Jones explanation of Malibu earthquake dangers will be available to watch live on the city’s website …. or in person … at City Hall at 6:30 tomorrow night.
