Malibu’s six city council candidates displayed knowledge, thoughtfulness and civility at the candidates’ debate held Wednesday, Aug. 21. The event took place in city council chambers at Malibu City Hall before a packed crowd of onlookers and supporters.
The debate, hosted by The Malibu Times and moderated by Arnold G. York, Malibu Times publisher, consisted of 90 minutes of Q&As with the six candidates — Laureen Sills, Carl Randall, Jefferson Wagner, Rick Mullen, Skylar Peak and Jennifer deNicola — as well as followup questions from York.
Topics discussed included:
•The intersection of PCH safety and continuing development
•Homelessness — can assistance lead to incentives for homeless individuals to move to town?
•Climate change and how far candidates will go to preserve the Malibu way of life
•Short-term rentals: Necessary income for the “cash rich, house poor” or scourge on the neighborhood?
Candidates were also asked a series of individualized questions having to do with their policy stances, reputations, experience and political allies.
