The Pepperdine University women’s volleyball team is off to a strong start this season, winning the Radisson Suites Buena Park Volleyball Classic, at Fullerton this weekend. The Waves won all three tournament matches in three-game sweeps.
Pepperdine had victories over UNC Greensboro and the University of Delaware in the opening rounds and concluded the winning weekend with a defeat of host Cal State Fullerton (25-21, 25-13, 25-18) on Saturday night in the championship match.
“We had a really good day today,” Pepperdine assistant coach Tim Jensen said. “We’re really proud of our kids. The concentration level was great all day. Our execution was flawless at times.”
Senior outside hitter Julie Rubenstein earned tournament MVP honors after averaging 5.1 kills and hitting .418 in the three matches. She was joined on the all-tournament team by senior middle blocker Cassi Chamberlain, who averaged 2 kills and freshman libero Stevi Robinson, who averaged 5.6 digs.
The Waves last opened the season with a 3-0 record in 2001.
Pepperdine returns to the court this weekend as they travel to Corvallis, Ore., for the Oregon State Asics Classic. The Waves will face Colorado State, Pacific and the host Beavers.
