Malibu residents can learn the art of surf fishing on Sat., July 6, when the California Department of Fish and Wildlife hosts “Free Fishing Day” at Leo Carrillo State Park.
Normally, anyone over the age of 16 is required to obtain a valid license when fishing. But, twice a year the department of fish and wildlife lets residents sample sport fishing before committing to purchasing an annual license, which costs almost $46. The second “Free Fishing Day” of 2013 is scheduled for Sept. 7.
Additionally, rangers will provide free fishing training and bait from 9 to 11 a.m. Visitors will have to provide their own rod and wheel.
“Surf fishing is one of the many exciting recreational opportunities in Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area,” said National Park Service ranger Ryan Stead in a press release. “This is a chance to learn from a few park rangers who enjoy the challenge of the sport.”
Leo Carrillo State Park is located at 35000 West Pacific Coast Highway in Malibu in the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area. Parking is $12.
