To publish a letter that assassinates the character of any person makes one wonder about the judgment of a newspaper. To publish that same letter again, as one of “The Best Letters of 2004,” makes it clear that there is a political agenda that reminds us of Dan Rather. Robert S. Weiner, a friend of President Clinton, has assassinated the character of Judge Starr, dean of the School of Law at Pepperdine University. He actually believes that Judge Starr is responsible for the investigation that led to the impeachment of William Jefferson Clinton.
I would like to remind Mr. Weiner and your readers that Judge Starr was ordered by Attorney General Janet Reno to investigate, not President Clinton’s sexual activity, but the fact that he lied to a grand jury. President Clinton pointed his finger at the cameras, swore that he “never had sex with that woman, not once” and then went on to lie to a grand jury. If I or anyone else I know had so lied, witness Martha Stewart, I/we would be in jail. As President of the United States, Mr. Clinton was held to the highest standard of honesty and he let every person in this country down. President Clinton has been disbarred in his own state of Arkansas and in the Supreme Court of the United States as a result of his crime. Those decisions were made by a group of his peers.
Pepperdine is fortunate to have Judge Starr as Dean of the School of Law. Dean Starr represents attributes of character, honesty and integrity, which are most important to law students as they go on to represent those of us who will be putting our trust in them.
