AA childcare too precious to lose

My name is Lexie Kelly, I’m going to be a junior next year at Malibu High School. MHS has a program where the students have to complete at least 80 hours of community service by graduation, that’s 20 hours a year. For a long time, I put off doing community service, not caring about it or just too busy for it, until my friend got sick and asked me to go in her place. Her service was to watch the children of the AA members during the meeting. Going, and watching these kids, interacting, caring for them, it changed me.

Since September, I have been doing this community service, and I can honestly say that I’m doing something helpful, if not for the community, but for these kids. The kids need the childcare as much, if not more, than the parents need the AA meetings. Recently, I overheard that the SMMUSD school board plans on canceling the childcare because of liability issues. I implore the city council and school board not to, for if they cancel the childcare, they lose several AA members.
