Cyrene Houdini wows the crowd of kids at her magic booth, one of the offerings at Kids Towne.

There’s something new at the Malibu Farmers Market and oh, oh, oh, it’s magic, arts and fun galore for kids.

What is Kids Towne? It is the latest addition to the popular and bustling Farmers Market that takes place at the Civic Center on Sundays from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m.

In addition to a magician called Cyrene Houdini, you will find her fellow Kids Towne crewmembers opposite the food court on the library side of the market.

But there’s more than Cyrene’s magic shows—the collection of colorful booths offers everything from hair braiding with beads to face painting to outdoor artistry and clay molding. In other words, something kids can really get their hands into.

The wholesome activities keep the little ones entertained while their parents shop for fragrant basil and herbs nearby as well as a cornucopia of fresh fare.

Cyrene Houdini’s magic is just one of the hot spots at Kids’ Towne.

The Malibu resident grew up in Hollywood where she started her career in adding her magic touch to major motion pictures.

“I went to Hollywood High and lived on Outpost Drive,” she recalled, “I could go past the stars on the Walk of Fame and the Magic Castle every day.”

She claims, in the course of her magical career, she has performed feats few have been able to duplicate, including “Sawing a Man in Half.”

As Cyrene said with a smile: “Husbands always ask me to saw their wives in half so I decided to give the men a fair cut.”

Cyrene stays in touch with the community at the Malibu bodega in the La Costa area called Country Liquor and Grocer. But she gets her greatest joy in magic. She said it is a wonder for all ages from four to 104 adding that, “If you are older than 104, then you are the magician.”

Proof positive? In addition to the kids, one of her first in line one recent Sunday was ninety-something-year-old actor Dick Van Dyke. Both say their love of slight of hand dates back to their memberships at the famed Magic Castle.

But whether it’s magic, face painting or crispy fresh carrots, Kids Towne and its produce purveyors make up a great mix for a perfect family friendly afternoon.
