Michael Zweig, local resident, died March 21 after a battle with cancer. He was 58.

Zweig was born on Dec. 2, 1952 in Altoona, Pa. and grew up in Queens, N.Y. He attended the State University of New York at Buffalo as an undergraduate and received his law degree from Georgetown University in Washington, D.C.

Zweig was known for his contributions to the community, particularly to Malibu Little League, which he was involved with for more than 15 years. He was inducted as a charter member of the Malibu Little League Hall of Fame for his dedication to the league, particularly the softball league. He coached the “Dream Team,” comprised of 13 to 16-year-old junior softball players, during the 2005-2006 and 2006-2007 seasons. The team won the Tournament of Champions for the district during those two consecutive years, something that had never been accomplished in the 50 year history of Malibu Little League. Zweig served as assistant coach for four years for the Malibu High School team, where his daughters attended school.

Zweig was also the current president of the Malibu Optimist Club when he became ill.

Zweig is survived by his wife Marie and children Megan, Casey and Sarah. A memorial service is planned for March 27, at Kehillat Israel, 16019 Sunset Blvd. in Pacific Palisades, at 2 p.m.
