Amanda Duff Dunne, a former actress and the widow of screenwriter and film director Philip Dunne, died on April 6 from cancer. She was 92.
Dunne was born on March 6, 1914 in Fresno and was raised in Santa Barbara. She appeared in several films in the late ’30s and early ’40s as Amanda Duff. She met her husband while working on the 20th Century Fox lot.
The Dunnes were married in 1939 and had three daughters. They built a home in Malibu following World War II. After Philip Dunne formed the Committee for the First Amendment to protest the procedures of the House Un-American Activities Committee, the Dunnes’ home became a place for political meetings.
Amanda Duff Dunne was involved in local Democratic politics, the League of Women Voters and the Audubon Society. After she stopped acting, she got involved in photography.
Dunne is survived her daughters, Miranda, Philippa and Jessica; brother George and two grandchildren.
