There seems to be some confusion about my comments regarding the Malibu Road fire. First, let me be very clear about my respect for the fire fighters who protect and serve our community. I have never doubted their courage or their skill. Nor did I intend my comments at our City Council meeting to be a criticism of their efforts. However, as a City Council member, I am constantly reminded that there is no such thing as a perfect policy.
Specifically, I was asking to review a policy which directs all assets to a fire’s origin. I realize that it is imperative to set up a Command Center. However, from a laymen’s point of view, had a few fire engines, especially those from station 88 located on Malibu Road, been directed to the homes that were in the path of the fire, they could have reached the endangered homes within two minutes. Proof of the fire fighters extraordinary efforts is that once they did arrive, the fire was almost immediately contained. To that end, I am eternally grateful to them.
I am the first to admit that I lack fire fighting expertise. However, as an elected official, I feel that it is important to ask questions of the experts, gather facts and, where possible, improve on existing policies.
