80 Malibu Kids In DACA
As expected …. President Donald J. Trump has partly fulfilled his campaign promise to eliminate the DACA program.
He left it to Attorney General Jeff Sessions to make the formal announcement.

“The program, known as DACA, that was effectuated under the Obama administration, is being rescinded …
“The policy was implemented unilaterally, to great legal controversy and legal concern, after Congress rejected the legislative proposals to extend similar benefits, on numerous occasions, to this same group of illegal aliens.”
There are local consequences.
Malibu school officials estimate there are 80 kids in Malibu’s public schools who can loosely be described as dreamers …. either with parents not legal status, who are themselves not legal status, or are DACA students .
The president is expected to kick the can to Congress … and give the Republicans there six months to come up with a plan.
Attorney General Jeff Session has been given the job of explaining the president’s decision.
Expect that at around 8 this morning.

Motorcyclist Killed In Kanan Tunnel
It was weekend of motorcycle carnage on Malibu roads.
One man was killed … at least a half dozen injured … in a weekend-long series of motorcycle crashes.
Traffic was stopped along P C H … at times in both directions and in multiple places … at the same time two small brushfires were breaking out.
Last night … a motorcyclist was killed in a crash in the northbound bore of Tunnel Number 1 on Kanan Dume Road.
That caused a huge traffic jam … as cars heading home to the valley were stuck on this side of the hill.
The rider died at a hospital …. no word on what caused the crash.

Bicyclist Mowed Down By Motorcycle
A Malibu resident riding his bicycle along Latigo Canyon Road was struck from behind by a motorcycle … which had wiped out on a curve while racing two other motorbikes,
John Abbene was badly hurt … a severely shattered elbow and a wrist broken in 3 places.
The downed motorcyclist told the injured bicyclist he had tried to pass the bicyclist on the right after hitting gravel.
The motorcyclist and the two men he was racing with sped off without offering the injured man assistance … or call for help.
He did give a name … maybe fake … Alan Dawkins.
Described as a a white male about 50 with blonde hair . and a British accent.
He was dressed in full leathers, helmet, gloves and his motorcycle was a high performance bike with red tank.
The C-H-P has the case … one of at least a half dozen serious motorcycle crashes in and above Malibu over the Labor Day weekend.

PCH Lane Closure For 3 Weeks At Latigo Cliff
Work will resume this week on removing debris at the bottom of the cliff on Pacific Coast Highway at Latigo Beach.
That same project was halted earlier this summer … when it caused hour-long traffic jams during peak beach visitor season.
Contractors working for the state will remove boulders, rocks and gravel that has fallen from the cliff … and accumulated behind a concrete “K-rail” barrier.
The debris is three feet deep in places … and the K-rail barrier kept the road open during last winter’s heavy rainstorms.
City of Malibu officials asked the state to hold off on the project … as the gigantic traffic jams developed when repairs began in August.
Starting today . and for the next three weeks … one lane will be closed on westbound PCH between Corral Canyon and Latigo Canyon roads.
The lane closures will be from 6 in the morning to 2 in the afternoon.
Eastbound traffic will not be affected … and there was no word if weekend traffic would be affected.

Metro Would Like To Unload Malibu Bus Service
Malibu was caught by surprise this summer when the M-T-A … Metro … dramatically cut bus service on Line 534 … the Malibu bus …. just at the beginning of the summer beach season.
Overcrowded buses and long waits prompted the regional agency to reinstate some of those runs.
But midday bus service on 534 remains reduced … with some buses from Santa Monica turning around at the Malibu Civic Center and heading back.
Two years ago … a Metro study recommended that Metro drop bus service to Malibu … as outside Metro’s core service area.

“In the case of Line 534, I think the Blue Ribbon Commission as it was called was looking at the fact that Line 534 basically – once Expo Line opened – was basically only going to operated from downtown Santa Monica to Malibu, and that it may be best to be served by a different operator… it might be Big Blue Bus. “
The Big Blue Bus is the Santa Monica city bus line … which has shown no inclination to subsidize bus trips to Malibu.
This summer’s reduction in Malibu bus service may the first of cut to line 534 … as it suffers a possible death by a thousand cuts.

The Last Picture Show
Malibu’s movie theater may close Sunday night … for good.
We reported that last Friday.
Real estate industry sources indicate regal Malibu Twin theater will fade to black.
The tiny twinplex has had a tough time … with Hollywood film distributors preferring to exhibit in larger … multiple screen cineplexes.
The shopping center owner has reportedly been unable to find any other tenant who wants to show movies here.
The closure leaves the Malibu Film Society’s screenings as the last place to see first-run movies in Malibu.
It shows movies in the Malibu Jewish Center and Synagogue … on a subscription basis.

Foundation Cites Increased Parent Giving
The Santa Monica Malibu Education Foundation says it increased the number of donors to local schools by almost 16 percent.
Parents in the district gave about one and a half million dollars to the foundation … and another 1 million or so was raised from companies and institutions.
The foundation funds the district’s elementary arts program, instructional assistants in classrooms, ballroom dance for fifth graders and student wellness programs at all 18 public schools in Malibu and Santa Monica.
The foundation has -not- achieved widespread support in Malibu … where many parents chafe at a funding structure that aims at equalizing donations to rich and poor schools alike.

Lady Gaga’s Rooster Has Twitter Aflutter
Finally this morning …. the tabloids are all atwitter about Lady Gaga’s rooster.
It crows at sunrise.
Neighbors on Morning View Drive are supposedly complaining.
The web site that posted the gripe didn’t have the cajones to print the name of the supposed complaining party.
But it quotes them as saying … and we quote … “We don’t mind watching that beautiful white horse of hers walking around the yard … but that rooster never shuts up.
“Who has chickens and roosters?
“She doesn’t live on a farm.
“This is a multimillion-dollar residential beach neighborhood in Malibu.”
Close quote …
That may make some in Malibu Park want to run out and buy a rooster.
