Rose Marie Engel passed away June 1 at the age of 87.
Engel was born Nov. 9, 1925 in Hazleton, Pa. to recent immigrants Gaetano and Maria Costabile, from Cosenza, Italy. During her late 20s, she moved to Chicago where she met her future husband, Donald Engel. The couple married in April 1954, and began their adventuresome life together in California. In 1957, they moved to Malibu and built their dream home on Point Dume. The pair spent 32 years there, where they raised their son, Jim. Engel spent more than two decades at her most recent home in Camarillo.
Engel loved golf and kept hitting the links over seven decades. She and her husband traveled to five continents, more than 25 countries and throughout much of the United States during their 51 years of marriage.
Engel is predeceased by her husband, Donald; brothers Louis, Michael, John, and George; and sisters Congetta and Jennie. She is survived by her brother, Sal (wife, Mary Rae) and sister, Helen; her son, Jim (wife, Dawn); and grandchildren William, Abbey, Devin and Damien, as well as, former daughter-in-law Julie Nordstrom.
A memorial service took place June 14 at Engel’s home.
The family would like to thank neighbor Heidi Lamb and the staff at Assisted Home Hospice for their care and comfort of Engel during her final months.
