Workers at the Malibu Lagoon project site this week put up a metal shade structure, one of the several features State Parks officials have touted as a means of improving the educational experience for students who visit the lagoon.

The structure is designed to make shadows look like kelp when the sun shines through carvings in the metal. It sits above an outdoor classroom area where students will be able to sit and observe the lagoon, according to officials.

The Malibu Lagoon reopened to the public about a month ago after a controversial eight-month project by State Parks to reroute the lagoon’s waterflow and improve water circulation.

Workers still have to install other features such as a fountain, but are expected to be done by a May 3 ribbon-cutting ceremony at the lagoon.
