Fifth-graders at Point Dume Marine Science Elementary School traveled to Catalina Island Marine Institute last month for a three-day adventure in hands-on experiential science. With the guidance of expert instructors, students engaged in lab and field activities to study marine biology and island ecology. Snorkeling, both during the day and at night, and kayaking allowed students to get close to ocean flora and fauna, including marine mammals, fish, sharks, rays, invertebrates, plankton and algae. Touch tanks brought even more marine animals within arms’ reach. Day and evening hikes provided a chance to experience Catalina’s diverse land environments. For many students, dorm living was a new and exciting experience in itself. The students gained independence along with an appreciation of the wonders of science.
