The Sharks’ Marie Vazelakis drives the ball to the basket.

The Malibu High School girls varsity basketball team recently played two Frontier League games, first defeating Grace Brethren 58-22, before losing to first-ranked Santa Clara 45-32.

Malibu freshmen twins Helena and Marie Vazelakis continued their late season splurge and led the Sharks in scoring in both games. In the win over Grace Brethren they scored 30 points between them, 20 of which were scored in the second half. Co-captain Hannah Robinson added eight points, as did center Sierra Zontelli, who also led in rebounding with 11.

In the second game, the Santa Clara Saints took a commanding 33-10 first half lead against the cold-shooting Sharks. The Vazelakis sisters scored 21 of Malibu’s 32 points, including 12 in the fourth quarter.

Heading into the final two games of the season, the Sharks have an overall record of 11 wins and 10 losses and a Frontier League record of four wins and four losses.

Malibu must win both of their two remaining games against Santa Paula and Bishop Diego to qualify for the post-season playoffs.
