Ellison Adds To Billionaire’s Beach Holdings – Dump Trucks To Roll At Malibu High – Malibu Killed the LNG Terminal 10 Years Ago

Three dozen dumptrucks a day … that’s the forecast for Morning View Drive at Malibu High.

10 years ago this week … Malibu narrowly escaped having its coast turned into a floating petroleum tanker terminal.

And Larry Ellison buys yet another chunk of Billionaire’s Beach.

This is Malibu’s only local daily news.

It’s the Tuesday edition … from Radio Malibu  …. 97 point 5 K B U.

——

Good morning Calle del Barco!

——

Malibu residents joined the rest of California and Arizona in being startled by a meteor last night … at about 9 o’clock.

The Navy says it wasn’t them … and video captured accidentally in San Diego showed the meteor was well south of there.

——

Construction fences went up yesterday on Morning View Drive … as Malibu High School’s partial demolition and reconstruction is getting underway.

Interior demolition has already begun inside the easternmost end of the campus … Building F.

Contractors are waiting for a final green light from the Coastal Commission to knock down the building itself … to replace it with a new two story structure.

But in the next few weeks … up to three dozen dump trucks per day will be leaving the campus … carrying dirt away from the hillside to the east of the campus.

The trucks will be using Morning View Drive during a 4 hour window …. while classes are in session but not while students will be coming and going from campus.

Flaggers … city volunteers on patrol officers … and sheriff’s deputies will be directing traffic.

The dirt will be hauled to a willing taker in Oxnard.

It will make way for a new access driveway up the hill east of the school … and a parking lot on the flat mesa east of the soccer-football-track stadium.

All the heavy construction equipment will make Morning View a congested mess for the next year and a half.

——

The City of Malibu has hired a new top cop … sort of.

Susan Duenas has been hired as the city’s new public safety manager … a replacement for the former director of emergency service Brad Davis.

Davis went on longterm sick leave … then emerged healthy enough to take the same job at a city in the Bay Area.

Duenas will have a much-expanded role in Malibu.

The new Public Safety Manager’s duties will include higher level management responsibilities.

This includes being the city’s main liaison with its police department … the L-A County Sheriff’s Office … as they build their new Malibu substation.

The Public Safety Manager will coordinate with outside agencies on all public safety and emergency preparedness matters … and manage the City’s emergency and public safety volunteers, including the CERT volunteers.

Duenas has over 20 years of experience in leadership of emergency management with city and county government agencies.

Duenas previously served as the Emergency Services Manager for the City of Oxnard.

10 years ago this week … Malibu dodged a bullet.

The California State Lands Commission … an obscure state panel … handed the residents of Malibu and Ventura County a decision on the proposed floating L-N-G terminal called Cabrillo Port.

B H P Billiton … a giant Australian resources company … had proposed anchoring a factory ship permanently 14 miles off of Malibu.

The ship would have belched smog and brought in explosive L N G tankers … with a threat of blowing up Malibu … into the shipping lanes plied by dozens of large freighters every week.

In order to get around local smog rules … Vice President DIck Cheney personally intervened in the permitting process.

He demanded that the U-S E-P-A declare the proposed floating factory ship to be a federally-controlled island … and thus immune from state and county smog rules.

When the state found out about that … it refused to allow B H P Billiton to cross state-owned tidelands with its pipelines.

Had Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger had his way …. the factory ship and its fleet of L N G supertankers would be visible this morning to the southwest of Zuma Beach …

with tons of smog blanketing the Malibu coast from offshore.

Tomorrow …. we’ll have more on this …. and how Malibu fought to preserve its coast from becoming an industrial zone.

The new king off Malibu has just added another jewel to his crown.

Larry Ellison has purchased his tenth mansion along Billionaire’s beach.

Price this time … 48 million dollars … according to the web site The Real Deal dot com.

Ellison owns much of the oceanfornt property between Nobu .. which he partly owns … and his newest acquisition.

His new property carries some baggage.

It’s seller is Lisette Ackerberg.

She thwarted a public access easement that was promised years ago … and hired a sham public access charity that tried to get her off the hook.

The walkway t the beach was eventually opened.

Ellison is a founder of Oracle computers … and reportedly the ninth-richest man on the globe.

Ellison has up until now kept his houses on Malibu as an investment.

He’s made no indication of his longterm plans.
