After a demonstration by artist Johanna Spinks, Juan Cabrillo Elementary students from kindergarten through third grade had a chance to paint their own portraits.

Portrait artist Johanna Spinks, who paints for The Malibu Times Face of Malibu series, led a special demonstration and lesson at Juan Cabrillo Elementary School on Thursday. Students from kindergarten through third grade participated in the installment of Juan Cabrillo’s “Visiting Artist Series.” The series has run for four years at the school and invites local artists — often school parents — who work in art-related fields to share and discuss their work.

“The highlight for me, though, was the morning assembly where I painted half a face, and kids, from kindergarten through third grade, were invited up onto the stage to finish the other side of the face….there are some budding portraitists out there,” Spinks said.

“Our visiting artists are the inspiration for an art-related project that the Cabrillo students participate in,” art instructor Nicole Fisher added. “This allows them to incorporate what they have learned into an actual work of art.”
