Dick and Ida Corman: Love and a cardboard box
It happened in November 1950. A couple of us guys went to a small golf course outside of Burlington, Iowa. There was a long hill that was good for sledding in the winter snow. The area was crowded with people enjoying themselves. We used a cardboard box to slide down the snow. During one run down the hill, a pretty high school girl jumped on the back of the cardboard and held onto me as we careened down the hill. I fell in love instantly. When I returned home, I informed my mother I had met the girl I was going to marry. She asked what her name was, and I said, “Ida.” She then asked, “What is her last name?” I replied, “I don’t know, but she’s the one.”
So, never underestimate the importance of an old cardboard box. It brought me the “Queen of my Heart.” We went from new love to true love in 50 years.
On April 14, 2002, Dick and Ida Corman celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. They have lived in Malibu for 36 years.
Dick Corman retired after three careers: missile engineer, manufacturing agent and a stand-in for actor Tom Hanks (nine movies). Now Dick is the Point Dume Santa Claus. Ida worked for local cable companies for 22 years and as a teacher’s aide for local schools. They have two children, two grandchildren and a cat.
Joel and Nancy King: Two Kings a-courting
The first day Joel and I met was rollerblading on the beach at Venice. There were so many “coincidences” about our lives, the least of which is that both of our last names are King! We have sons and daughters of the same ages, share initials, and the list just goes on and on. In fact, despite our immediate, mad attraction and the universe’s obvious hints, we were both a little shy and danced around each other for the first six months. But, as fate would have it, we did indeed fall in love. Better than that, we became great friends and close companions. We are compatible in so many wonderful ways: spiritually, physically-we even have the same metabolisms! We nurture each other’s creative lives: Joel is an actor and I am a writer/artist. We love to be outdoors hiking, rollerblading and just enjoying the beautiful planet. When I was recently in a car accident and unable to rollerblade, Joel tried to make me feel better by telling me that he “gets sick of skating and often takes months off!” It was a total lie, but the support he showed was wonderful and made my recovery a shared endeavor. It’s a great delight for us, after a year and-a-half, to be putting our lives together this month in celebration of this great gift of love.
