Yaroslavsky to observe Ukraine Presidential election

Los Angles County Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky will join an international delegation in Ukraine that will observe the presidential election on Dec. 26.

Yaroslavsky has participated as an international election observer twice before, during the first free election in Romania after the fall of Nicolae Ceausescu, and again during the 2000 presidential election in Mexico.

The Washington, D.C.-based National Democratic Institute for International Affairs is sponsoring the delegation.

SMC board selects leaders

At its recent meeting, the Santa Monica College Board of Trustees selected Carole Currey to serve as chair for 2005. Currey was elected to the board in 1979 and this will be her fifth term serving as chair. She was the vice chair last year. The board selected Nancy Greenstein to serve as vice chair. Greenstein was elected to the board in 2002.

Preparing for

power outages

Brad Davis, the city’s emergency preparedness coordinator, has released tips on how Malibu residents can get information when the power goes out.

Davis said one should plan ahead to overcome communication challenges. He recommended keeping a telephone at home that will work without AC power. Home telephone systems do not require power; but the system is designed to accommodate only a fraction of all subscribers and should not be used for an emergency. Davis said people should also make sure the telephone is “on the hook,” or it will unnecessarily tie up the telephone line. If one’s local telephone exchanges are damaged, it is possible the long distance service works and a friend or relative living out-of-state should be made the point of contact for the family. The Malibu Hotline will be continually updated with the latest information during an emergency at 456.9982.

A portable battery-operated AM radio or TV is also helpful. Malibu’s Emergency radio station is located on the 1620 AM dial. There are various types of radios in the market; radios with a crank handle, or solar power to charge the batteries can be pur chased at camping supply stores.

Two-way radios are very handy. Malibu maintains a Ham radio network system, with operators based throughout the area.

Dick Clark to ring

in New Year home

or in hospital

Malibu resident Dick Clark is out of intensive care after suffering a stroke on Dec. 6, but will remain in the hospital, possibly until the New Year, according to a report by the Associated Press.

The AP report said Paul Shefrin, Clark’s publicist, said the former, long-running American Bandstand TV show host, who is 75, is in rehab.

Clark will watch the annual New Year’s Eve special broadcast from Times Square from the hospital or his home in Malibu.

TV host Regis Philbin will replace Clark on Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve 2005, which Clark has hosted for 32 years. When he first suffered his mild stroke, Clark first said he would be there for his New Year’s duties.
