——

Pepperdine University’s Public Safety Department has asked people on the Malibu campus not to hike, bike or jog alone, especially from dusk until dawn.

Ten mountain lion sightings have been reported in the last six weeks.

There were two more mountain lion sightings .,. including one in the heart of the campus … two days ago.

That’s when a cougar was spotted near the Smothers Theater.

Cougar sightings have also been reported all the way down to John Tyler Drive … a block up the hill from P C H.

Cougar sightings also reported near the campus entrance off Malibu Canyon Road.

Pepperdine University has contacted the California Department of Fish and Wildlife … and the National Parks Service … to request assessment of the recent mountain lion behavior … according to a statement from Pepperdine printed by the Pepperdine Graphic … the campus newspaper.

The Santa Monica Malibu Unified School School board meeting . … tonight at 5:30 … at Malibu City Hall.

Big item on the agenda is the achievement gap …  the meeting is at 5:30 tonight … at the Malibu City Hall.

Well … in the good news bad news department … Topanga Canyon Blvd. was reopened to traffic at 4 o’clock yesterday.

The road — Highway 27 — was closed for more than a week after a massive landslide … huge boulder … and thousands of rocks fell on it during the storms.

About 70 truckloads of rocks … dirt and trees had been carted away.

Late yesterday … Caltrans engineers pronounced a newly-graded slope next to the highway safe … and the road was reopened.

——

As we reported … the pending closure of Santa Monica Airport to jet takeoffs and landings will affect a company planning passenger service there next week.

JetSuite tells KBU News yesterday … they are indeed cancelling service and refunding ticket prices.

Safety run-away arrest fields …. crunched up cement … are going to be installed at each end of the runway …

That will leave it too short to be used by corporate jets.

The state attorney general’s office will not charge Malibu-area sheriff’s deputies with any crime … related to the disappearance and eventual death of Mitirce Richardson.

The California Attorney General’s Office has concluded there was no evidence to prosecute the deputies for their actions.

Her family is outraged … and feel the case was only brought about because the then attorney general … Kamala Harris … wanted to use it as publicity in her run for the U-S Senate.

A state prosecutor said in a letter to the family that there was “insufficient evidence to support a criminal prosecution for destruction, alteration or concealment of evidence.”

Those are the words of Lance Winters … an senior assistant attorney general … in a letter to her family obtained by the L-A Daily News newspaper.

Winters also said that even if there were evidence found, the statute of limitations precludes prosecution.

That has infuriated the woman’s supporters and friends.

Mitrice Richardson had eaten at Geoffrey’s restaurant on Pacific Coast Highway on Sept. 16, 2009.

She didn’t pay her bill and was taken to the Malibu-Lost Hills sheriff’s station.

Her car, which included her purse and cellphone, had been impounded.

But she was allowed to walk into the darkness at the sheriff’s station … next to the 1-0-1 Freeway in Calabasas … in the middle of the night.

Her bones were found months later in Malibu Canyon.

Finally … back at Pepperdine … there’s a statue in the center of the campus of Christopher Columbus.

The private christian university has faced criticism for that … from its own student body.

There have been student sit ins … one student told the Pepperdine Graphic newspaper that Christopher Columbus represents murder, genocide and was praised for essentially stealing and harming a lot of people.

They asked for the statue to be removed.

Univeristy President Andrew Benton is now quoted in the Pepperdine student newspaper… the Graphic.

Columbus s going to be sailing away …  across the Atlantic … eastbound … to the Pepperdine campus in Florence … Italy.

One trusts he will not encounter

wild mountain lions there.
