Malibu residents gathered Saturday to witness the formal tile unveiling of the Cross Creek Road tile project. The fundraising project, which features more than 400 hand painted tiles, has raised more than $70,000 to date in revenue for Legacy Park.

Janine Waldbaum, a Malibu Tile Works tile artist who has been in the business for 15 years, completed the layout design and tile work. More than 100 of the tiles were hand painted and personalized by residents at an event in November of last year. Waldbaum individually inscribed the other 300 with lettering and the Legacy Park logo with the original cuerda-seca technique, which included firing, silk screening and a second round of firing.

“I felt lucky to be involved and leave my mark in Malibu,” Waldbaum said.

Members from City Council and the Planning Commission were present and encouraged residents to fill the remaining empty tile spaces to raise more money for the park project. The tiles range in cost from $200 to $400, depending on size.
