The National Wildlife Federation will announce its “#saveLAcougars” campaign, which supports mountain lion research, on Friday, Sept. 19 at the Liberty Canyon Trailhead, just north of the 101 Freeway.

The campaign supports creating a crossing for mountain lions at Liberty Canyon, which would help diversify the mountain lion population gene pool in the Santa Monica Mountains. Because of the dangers of crossing the 101 Freeway, a small population of mountain lions has been isolated in the mountains and is threatened by low genetic diversity.

The campaign launch will feature a media tour at 9 a.m., which will include a walk on the current road the mountain lions must navigate, and a public rally at 10 a.m. For more information about the event, visit savelacougars.org.
