Malibu Middle and High school students shared their vocal talents at the 2016 Malibu Rotary Club Middle and High School Annual Singing Competition on Jan. 27.
Fifteen singers qualified for the competition by performing material of their own choosing in front of Choral Director Amy Loch. The competition took place at Pepperdine University’s Raitt Recital Hall, where the singers performed in front of five judges and were scored based on range, pitch, projection, presentation and style.
First through third place finishers in both the middle and high school divisions were awarded cash prizes of $200, $100 and $50 by the Malibu Rotary Club. A tie for third place in the high school division caused there to be four victors instead of three.
High school division winner Maggie Valdman showcased her voice by singing opera with a rendition of Mozart’s “Voi Che Sapete.” She is being sponsored by the Rotary Club to compete in the Rotary District 5280 Art, Dance, Music and Speech Competition on March 5 at Loyola Marymount University. Middle school division winner Gina Marcellino performed Scanlan and Tesori’s “Gimme Gimme.”
