Walter Zelman

Malibu resident Walter Zelman, a public health professor at Cal State Los Angeles, recently was named a recipient of the California State University (CSU) Faculty Innovation and Leadership Award. Zelman was one of only 19 CSU faculty members to receive the commendation, chosen from among 200 nominations.

Zelman earned the award for work that includes organizing the annual CSU Health Policy Conference in Sacramento where students can network with and learn from public health professionals from around the state. He also secured a $1.25 million education grant from Covered California to lead a statewide effort educating CSU students about the Affordable Care Act, greatly reducing the number of uninsured CSU students. Lastly, Zelman established an internship program with the California Department of Public Health, as well as piloting the Careers in Health Project at Cal State LA.
