The Coffee Group at Lily’s Cafe believes in equality for everyone in Malibu, except reporters and photographers. In Mitchell Tanen’s special to The Malibu Times entitled “Coffee Klatch On The Frontlines,” Mr. Tanen takes a detour off the information superhighway and states that the steering committee supported a single candidate in the recent Malibu City election. In fact, the Steering Committee endorsed NO candidate and publicized this fact far and wide within the Malibu community. It was our intent to inform our membership and the community of the positions of the individual candidates.

Our membership responded with an 87% turnout to the Malibu election polls on Tuesday, April 9. This turnout was superior to the voting numbers of the community at large. Members’ individual votes are hush-hush and I am unable to convey or relate how the total membership voted, but from the conversations around the morning coffee table I trust that at least four of the candidates received votes from the individual members.

Mr. Tanen, the Coffee Klatch excuses your youth for making this significant error in an otherwise truthful and favorable article on the Steering Committee. However, we thank you for your challenging work and, recognizing the modest pay a Malibu Times reporter makes, your journalism is astonishing.

Mr. Tanen acknowledged in his article that due to the constant bullying of Lily Castro (Lily’s Caf) and her family by a few ill-tempered Malibuites, the Lily’s Caf Steering Committee has now re-registered its name with the California Fair Political Practices Commission-MISC: Malibu Issues Steering Committee.
