This letter is addressed to the Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District.
I am writing to voice my support for the proposed restructuring of our Malibu facilities as described this past week in several community meetings.
It is time to stop the multi-million dollar band-aid solutions to our schools, in particular Malibu Middle and High school. The buildings are clearly outdated, decrepit, contaminated and a source of declining morale and antiquated teaching practices, especially our science and computer labs.
The “Windows, Paint, Floor and Doors” project is not a solution, even at its unfathomable cost. As the piecemeal demolition of the Malibu High School campus continues, new contaminants (PCBs) have been discovered on a sadly predictable basis.
While the recently proposed projects bring challenges, they represent the only long term solution discussed to date for this community—and the community has demonstrated overwhelming support for this vision.
I ask that you please make it your priority to ensure the success of these long overdue improvements. To do otherwise is a disservice to the students, staff and citizens of Malibu.
Thank you in advance for your consideration and support.
