Malibu Invitational 2015

REEF will present the ninth annual Malibu Invitational surf contest to raise money for Lyon Herron Aug. 8 and 9, at the historic First Point Malibu.

The annual Shortboard Pro and Legend’s Invitational Surf Contest is a contest in which surfers of all different ages surf the same waves to benefit people in need.

The core purpose of the event is to, “blend generations of surfers to save and enrich lives,” according to the Malibu Invitational website.

This year, the contest is honoring 22-year-old Lyon Herron who has been battling Gardner’s Syndrome since he was four. Despite years of growing tumors, cancers and hospital bills, Herron has fought hard against an incurable disease. Herron was featured in the April 21 edition of The Malibu Times.

“It is undeniable that Lyon’s optimistic outlook and genuine love of life is contagious to all those around him … [he] is truly an inspiration and beacon of light in lives of those he has touched,” said the Malibu Invitational’s statement about Herron’s life.

This year, the Malibu Invitational is working with THERAsurf, a nonprofit organization dedicated to children with special needs, and an abundance of other sponsors. Sponsors include Val Surf, Duke’s Malibu, Freedom Artists, Vans Off the Wall, Audi and Sicky Eyewear, among others.

All are welcome to attend and watch surfers of all ages compete for a cause.
