Malibu High School student, Jenna Sherry, was named second alternate and awarded a $2,500 college scholarship at this year’s California Junior Miss scholarship program held in Bakersfield last month.

The judging criteria is consistent at the local, state and national levels, with evaluations for scholastic achievement, a rigorous interview ranging from personal to political topics, and, following a week of contestant preparations and rehearsals, onstage presentations for talent, self-expression and fitness. Sherry, a member of Malibu High School’s Chamber Singers, performed “Journey to the Past” from the film “Anastasia.”

The Optimist Club of Malibu, together with donations from the Simon, Block and Hazan-Steinberg families, generously provided two $500 scholarships, each with state sponsorship, to the local program winners, Sherry and Erica Posey. Posey performed a monologue from “Romeo and Juliet” at the state finals.

This year’s Malibu Junior Miss scholarship program will be held in the spring and is open to all eligible junior class girls from any school who reside in Malibu. More information can be obtained online at www.ajm.org or by e-mailing ccozen123@aol.com.
