Malibu homeowners sue NBC

The homeowners filed the lawsuit Monday in Los Angeles Superior Court, claiming that they leased the $13,000-per-month home to two people, who then illegally subleased the house to NBCUniversal for the taping of the show.

The Malibu residents are suing the tenants for violating the terms of their lease agreement.

The homeowners reportedly say they have suffered general damages of $25,000 but may also seek punitive damages and an injunction.

Chamber begins shop local campaign

The Malibu Chamber of Commerce announced it is launching a “Shop the Bu” campaign to support local businesses. A press release from the Chamber stated the campaign will “help local businesses grow, increase tax receipts for the city and remind visitors to contribute to the local economy when they come to surf, vacation, swim and hike.”

“We listened to the community and built on what the merchants and Chamber members were saying about keeping dollars spent right here in Malibu,” Rebekah Evans, Malibu Chamber of Commerce president and CEO said. “Residents and visitors alike will find just about everything they need here, and we are developing special deals and discounts to help everyone save more when they spend.”

In keeping with its marine theme, the campaign will be introduced in “special waves.” “Soggy dollar” certificates will be available that can be redeemed at participating local stores.

Shop local campaigns are on the rise and have been implemented in nearby cities such as Agoura Hills, Oak Park and Moorpark. According to the release, studies have shown that the impact of shop local campaigns can have a wide range of positive impacts on local businesses.

Additionally, The Malibu Times has been promoting Malibu businesses with its own Shop Local section, the first of which appeared in the newspaper in June. The Nov. 24 issue of the newspaper will feature a holiday Shop Local section. To be a part of the holiday Shop Local feature, contact a Malibu Times sales representative.
