Vintage-car aficionados celebrated New Year’s Day with a long drive. About 80 owners with their cars took part in the “New Year’s Day Drive,” which began at Pepperdine University and concluded in Topanga at the home of Jan E. Voboril. Along the way, the drivers traveled up Pacific Coast Highway to Oxnard, then back down through the Santa Monica Mountains. They stopped at Paramount Ranch, where they enjoyed a picnic.

This was the 25th year of the event. Voboril started the tradition as a continuation of one he did while he lived in Prague, although that ride was done on bicycle. Voboril told The Malibu Times the version he did in Prague was in the snow, so the Southern California edition in his car is much more comfortable. Voboril drove a 1916 Lancia Kappa, an Italian make.

A rival New Year’s Day drive took place that ended at Topanga Ranch Market off PCH.
