Why is UBER so difficult to get in Malibu?
As a Driver with 2037 rides notched on my belt I can tell you the reasons why UBER (& Lyft) are so scarce in Malibu when you need a ride.
First, Malibu is too remote from consistent UBER activity. Drivers need to move swiftly and seamlessly from one ride to the next and Malibu does not have the requisite demand. Second, Drivers show up in Malibu when it’s the rider’s destination to be dropped off, then they bolt out of town to avoid getting trapped up in the winding hills.
Next, and perhaps more importantly, people in Malibu DO NOT TIP. Well not all people. Cher tips generously. I’ve driven her twice and each time it was a $25 tip on a $10 ride. But most Malibu residents, as most riders in L A and in the US, do not tip. 98% do not tip because they got sold on the false UBER narrative that ‘tipping is optional’ (interpreted to mean ‘tipping is unnecessary’). UBER has promoted this idea to hold down prices by giving riders permission not to tip. Unconscionable.
Hold on to your hats, Malibu because it may get even trickier to reach an UBER driver by March when drivers will begin a planned walk out with a proposed ‘ Ferris Bueller’s Day Off’ event when drivers will ALL take the same day off and randomly select a different day each week until better pay demands ( & tips) are met. Drivers are advising UBER riders to get ready for days without UBER (and Lyft).
