Crews Lower Into Newton Canyon

A man was found dead at the bottom of Newton Canyon on Tuesday evening, presumably after driving 900 feet over the side of Kanan Dume Road.

The Malibu Search and Rescue Team responded to a car-over call around 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday and searched rough terrain where they found a man lying near a car.

“Because of the remote location, heavy brush and darkness, a land=based evacuation proved difficult and dangerous,” said David Katz, a search and rescue spokesman. “Early Wednesday morning, Sheriff’s Air Rescue 5 helicopter was brought in to assist with evacuating the body.”

The victim has not been identified and an investigation is being handled by the LA County Coroner and Sheriff’s Homicide Bureau.
