Donald Sterling interested in leasing city land

City Attorney Christi Hogin announced at Monday’s council meeting that Los Angeles Clippers owner and real estate tycoon Donald Sterling recently approached Malibu officials about leasing a portion of the old Coldwell Banker building at city-owned Legacy Park.

The City Council discussed this during a closed-session prior to the regular meeting. State law prohibits disclosure of what is specifically said during closed sessions, but city officials must tell the public what the topics were. The Malibu Times contacted a Sterling spokesperson. She said she did not know about this. She said she would look into the matter. As of press time on Tuesday evening, she had not called back.

Coldwell Banker vacated the building last year. Super Care Drugs moved into a portion of the building in June.

Good education rocks

Malibu residents Pat Benatar and husband Neil ‘Spider’ Giraldo concluded their 2010 summer tour with two evenings at the Canyon Club in Agoura Hills on Saturday and Sunday in support of local public education. Hundreds of Malibu parents and teachers turned out to support the fundraiser. Benatar and Giraldo donated half of all ticket sales to fund the visual and performing arts at Malibu High School and the Santa Monica-Malibu Education Foundation’s Save Our Schools campaign. Benatar told audience members that she credited her high school choral teacher with inspiring her to pursue a singing career and encouraged concert goers to support the arts in their local schools.

Library closed, temporary one opening

The Malibu Library closed last week so it can be renovated. A temporary facility will open next to it in the Civic Center on Monday. The city says library renovations are expected to take about a year.

The City of Malibu and Los Angeles County are working together on the $5.6 million Library Renewal Project, which officials say will improve the interior and exterior of the library.
