Patricia “Pat” Joanne Ryan, born on June 12, 1932, passed away on Dec. 23, 2014, surrounded by family.

Pat was born and raised in Lindsay, in the San Joaquin Valley. She was the youngest of eight brothers and sisters.

“She thrived in the rural setting of the foothills of Sequoia National Forest,” a loved one shared. “Her appreciation of natural beauty inspired her to study art and painting.”

Pat was a prolific en plein air artist. She shared her passion of painting by sharing her time and knowledge with fellow artists and art students. Her love of the Santa Monica Mountains and the Malibu coastline led her to be an active participant in the Malibu Art Association and co-founder of the Allied Artists of the Santa Monica Mountains and Seashore. Pat hosted art galleries in Malibu for local artists to display their work. She also worked with the Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy group.

Pat was involved in Malibu-based community service. She was recognized by the City of Malibu for her help with the after school recreation, both through the school district and Parks & Recreation. She received a Dolphin Award from The Malibu Times for her community accomplishments. Pat also received commendations from the County of Los Angeles and the Santa Monica Mountain Conservancy for her volunteer work.

Pat is survived by her husband, Bob; their sons, Robert, Jon and Timothy; their son’s wives, Lori, Joan and Danielle; and five grandchildren.

“She will be greatly missed by family, friends and the art community of Malibu,” a friend of Pat shared.

A private family interment took place Jan. 5 at Woodlawn Cemetery in Santa Monica. Memorial services will take place Saturday, Jan. 24 at 11 a.m. at Gates, Kingsley & Gates Funeral Directors, located at 1925 Arizona Ave., Santa Monica. Immediately following, a celebration of her life depicting her artwork will take place at Duke’s Malibu Restaurant, 21150 Pacific Coast Hwy.
