Several Malibu High School students recently received national recognition for their academic achievements.

Seniors Dylan Gil-Gomez and Gabe Sloggy have been named semifinalists in the prestigious National Merit Scholarship Competition. Fewer than 1 percent of the more than 1.4 million students nationwide who took the PSAT test of critical reading, mathematics and writing last October achieved this honor.

Sloggy and Gil-Gomez will compete with approximately 16,000 other top students nationwide for more than $34 million in National Merit college scholarship awards.

While they are not eligible to continue in the scholarship competition, Malibu High seniors Nick Burrell, Sam Kaplan and Stephen Williams and former student Alexandra Posey were awarded Certificates of Commendation from the National Merit Scholarship Corporation for being among the top 3 percent of scorers on the test.

Gil-Gomez and fellow Malibu High senior Chris Delgado were also honored by the National Hispanic Recognition Program as two of the top 3,300 students of Hispanic heritage in the nation for their outstanding performance on the PSAT.
