Local artist Gay Summer Rick’s “Lights on Ocean” is among the paintings on display in her new exhibit, “Series in Night and Day.”

Malibu artist Gay Summer Rick currently celebrated the opening of her exhibit, “Series in Night and Day,” with a reception Oct. 5 at bG Gallery (Bleicher/Golightly/ Gorman) in Santa Monica. The exhibit opened Oct. 3 and will continue through Oct. 30, with a closing reception Oct. 27.

For “Series in Night and Day,” Rick created paintings inspired by her travels up and down the Los Angeles coast line. She has stopped on roads and highways across Malibu, Santa Monica and Venice, absorbing the nighttime and daytime urban and coastal views.

Rick uses palette knives and oil paint to create her signature overlay of colors, which meld impressionism and abstract color-field painting. In the exhibit, two different cities are evoked through paint: one bathed in color and sunlight between veils of fog, and one where the color seeps in behind the darkness of night.

This is bG Gallery’s third solo exhibition of paintings by Rick. The gallery is located at 1431 Ocean Ave. in Santa Monica.
