LNG myths

I attended a presentation by Linda Krop, Chief Council for the Environmental Defense Center, at the Marine Education Center in Oxnard on the 8th of October. Her presentation was on the myths and truths about liquid natural gas (LNG) proposed by BHP Billiton, an Australian mining company wishing to build a LNG terminal off of Malibu and Oxnard shores.

Myth: BHP Billiton wants to build an LNG facility off our coast and claims the facility will be safe.

Truth: The facility proposed by BHP Billiton has never been built by anyone or anywhere in the world. The people of Malibu and Oxnard will be the experimental guinea pigs.

Myth: BHP and big oil companies say California needs LNG to survive.

Truth: There is no credible evidence that California needs LNG. California’s Energy Commission has predicted that California will have adequate natural gas supplies for the next 10 to 20 years without importing LNG. During this period the use of alternative fuels can be developed.

Myth: BHP claims their LNG is clean and safe to the people and the environment.

Truth: LNG is just another polluting foreign fossil fuel that leads to global warming, rising ocean levels and increased air pollution. BHP’s own air experts predict over 200 tons of pollution each year will be released into our air.

I could go on but my space is limited.

Please join the people from Malibu and Oxnard opposed to LNG at Malibu Surfrider Beach Sunday, Oct. 22, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. hosted by Pierce Brosnan and Laird Hamilton.
