On the heels of a Dec. 21 Malibu Times article proclaiming “Internet, phone and cable prices set to drop,” I get a notice from Charter Communications that my Internet service is going up by $2 next month. I already pay $42.95 per month for their 3Mbps down/256kbps up/modem lease service.
Verizon is offering their “FiOS” 5Mbps down/2Mbps up service for $34.95/month with a one-year contract, or $39.95 month-to-month. This includes free installation and a wireless router.
Add Verizon’s estimate of $2 in taxes and fee per month, and I am looking at $37 per month with Verizon, versus $45 with Charter. Is it worth giving up my long time charter.net e-mail address for way faster Internet and $96 per year savings? You betcha!
I called Charter on the outside chance they’d at least maintain my current rate; no such luck! If you decide to switch your Internet provider, just make sure that you inform people and businesses of any change to your e-mail address before you cut the cord!
This is not an ad for Verizon!
